History and Epidemiology of ADHD
When did ADHD get discovered? No one knows the exact date or period. It might be present as far back as the Stone Age but there are no authentic records to prove either way. In 493 BC, physician-scientist Hippocrates described a condition or state that seems to be similar to what we now consider ADHD.
But we do not have any details on this issue and hence it would be difficult to draw any conclusion. It was initially described by Dr. Heinrich Hoffman in 1845. He detected it first in his own son, who was suffering from ADHD at the age of 3. He was a renowned writer and poet as well. His expressed the details in "The Story of Fidgety Philip" which was a very relevant description of a little boy who had attention deficit hyperactivity disorder.
In 1902 Sir George F. published a series of lectures with more detailed description to Royal College of Physicians in England. He described that a child with ADHD has genetic dysfunction and this brings about an impulsive and reactive pattern with significant behavioral problems.
All over the world ADHD is very common phenomenon. The general statistics say that approximately 3-5% children in preschool age get affected by ADHD. This means that only in U.S.A. approximately 2 million children are living with ADHD.
